Dear All My Friends:
I thank you very much for reading this mail. I sincerely beg for your mercy to pray for the victims in southern Taiwan who suffered so much in this time of the typhoon-stricken period.
There are many aspects to observe this disaster. I would say that people never learn from the history and we always pay for what we have neglected. This time, too, is a cruel result of ignorance and un-prevention of natural disaster. Now the work for us is even harder than prevention.
First, the beetle nut trees was probably the main factor in causing the mudslide. The fact is that beetle nut trees do not root very deeply under the soil, so everytime when there is an earthquake or typhoon, beetle nut trees just fall down, so is the soil loosened. I think our government does not learn the lesson from 921 earthquake, for which beetle nut trees were also the main cause.
Second, the over-exploitation of the sand along our river is the killer of our people. Due to the lack of building material, people in Taiwan just use the sand under the river to build houses. Once a large quantity of sand is used up, the bridges could not stand very firm and when the flood come, the bridge destroyed.
Third, there are too many fish-feeding ponds in southern Taiwan. These ponds are all man-made. They use the underground water to water the ponds, however, its feedback consequence is that our land horizon has been sinking gradually. As this typhoon brought us heavy rain, both the water from the mountain and the retreat of the tides along the shore brought an incredible amount of water to the sinking area. People and their fish are all drowned.
All I can say is that we do not respect this mother earth so the nature recovers in its own way. The most serious problem in the area now is the contagious disease and many children and older people exposed under the "venomous" environment, especially the H1N1 is also resuming very recently, we are very afraid of the spreading of the contagious disease among the sheltering houses for these victims.
If you can do something, please do not withdraw your hand. If you can not do anything, please pray. There is never too much prayer for the victims and the suffered.
